Attack on Journo: Editors call for media’s security
President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Shiva Gaunle and a group of editors on Sunday appealed to Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal to provide security to the media.
The concern comes in the wake of recent attacks and threats to media and journalists by the CPN-UML youth wing, Youth Association Nepal (YAN). On Saturday in Biratnagar, YAN chief Mahesh Basnet threatened to shut down Nagarik daily and jail its editor-in-chief Narayan Wagle while on Thursday a gangster attacked Annapurna Post reporter Kishore Budhathoki in Sankhuwasabha.
During the meeting at the UML Headquarters, Khanal assured the journalists that the government would provide security to the media and expressed commitment to book those responsible for attacking media persons.
The delegation included editor of The Kathmandu Post Akhilesh Upadhyay, Kantipur editor Sudhir Sharma, Nepal Weekly editor Prasant Aryal, Republica editor-in-chief Ameet Dhakal, Nagarik editor-in-chief Narayan Wagle, The Himalayan Times editor Ajaya Bhadra Khanal, Annapurna Post editor Jibendra Simkhada and executive editor Guna Raj Luitel, Naya Patrika editor-in-chief Krishna Jwala Devkota, Nepali Times editor Kunda Dixit, Rajdhani editor Rajan Sharma, Nepal Samarcharpatra editor Pushkar Lal Shrestha, The Reporters editor Yubaraj Ghimire, Himal Khabar Patrika editor Kiran Nepal and Himal South Asian editor Kanak Mani Dixit.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the prime minister demanding that the government guarantee freedom of expression and right to life guaranteed by the constitution.
The editors’ delegation is visiting Biratnagar on Monday to hold consultations with local journalists, civil society members and lawyers to boost the confidence of journalists in the region.
They will also visit Budhathoki, attacked by Bikash Rai and his accomplice Rupak Rai of Khandbari, who is undergoing treatment at Nobel Medical College, Biratnagar.
