POKHARA, JUL 31 -
Good news for lake conservationists and aficionados alike. Authorities are pulling up their sleeves for the proper conservation of lakes in Kaski district.
With a view to develop the municipal area and attract many tourists, Lekhnath Municipality has come up with a plan to conserve and develop the seven lakes situated in the municipality.
Under the plan, bicycle routes will be opened connecting the lakes—Begnas, Rupa, Gunde, Khaste, Nureni, Dipang and Maidi. “We have proritised this plan thinking that the municipality cannot be developed unless the lakes are conserved and developed,” said Narayan Prasad Gyawali, executive officer of the municipality.
The municipality said that cycle routes will help develop the area as a tourist destination and improve economic condition of local people. The Rs 350 million project is targeted to be completed in five years.
Baglung, Palpa, Itahari, Dhankuta and Mechinagar municipalities have already launched a similar programme which is gaining ground.
“The entire Kaski district will be developed if the lakes are conserved and developed,” said Chairman of Lekhnath Chamber of Commerce and Industry Baburam Jamarkattel. “Ninety percent tourists visiting Pokhara go to see Phewa lake. The cycle routes connecting the seven lakes will prolong their stay,” he said.
Chairman of Lake Conservation Committee under Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City, Maheshwor Ghimire, said that the cycle routes will protect the lakes from being encroached.
