197th bhanu jayanti: Tanahun house in ruins, conservation efforts zilch

PURNA BK
TANAHUN, JUL 12 -
As the country marks the 197th birth anniversary of pioneer poet Bhanu Bhakta Acharya on Wednesday, lack of efforts in conserving his birthplace has become a matter of serious concern.

The house where Acharya was born in Asar 29, 1871 BS in Bhanu VDC-3 in Tanahun district is in a dilapidated condition.

Only the foundation of the house, which is around 12 km away from Dumre along the Prithivi highway, exists now, while there is an overgrowth of grasses all over the remnants of the old house.

However, no effort has been made to reconstruct the house so far.

Located in the Bhanu Community Forest Consumers’ Committee, the house was reconstructed at the initiation of the Bhanu birthplace development committee with investment of around Rs 10.3 million during the shooting of a Nepali movie ‘Adikabi Bhanubhakta’ in 1998.

However, it was destroyed in a fire in 2004. Since then, neither the government nor any other private organisation has felt the need to reconstruct it. Director of the committee Nabinraj Dahal said they approached various ministries for help, but to no avail.

He said the committee aims to reconstruct the house and build 10 to 12 other similar houses around the area and develop it as Bhanu village. He added that the committee plans to provide visitors a homestay facility, a garden, a waiting place, a view tower and grovelled road in the ‘village.’

Dahal said Acharya’s personal belongings such as kharau (wooden sandals), Amkhara (a type of jug used to drink water) and bed are conserved in the committee’s office.

Acharya’s great grandson, Muktinath Acharya, expressed concern over the government apathy. “I wished to see the house reconstructed before I die, but I don’t think it will be fulfiled,” the 85-year-old said.
