MAKAWANPUR, JUN 29 -
The Rashtrapati Chure Conservation Programme of the government has been implemented in Makawanpur district.
The programme was launched in the district this fiscal year to conserve the Shakti river, which has turned land in two Makawanpur VDCs and some area in Bara district uncultivable.
Launched with a view to conserving the chure range and controlling deforestation in the area, the programme has been started at the top of the river, in which check-dam and bio-engineering works are adopted to conserve the river.
Under the programme, afforestation and plantation of seeds of various grasses have taken place in the area. Chairman of Chisapani-Shakti River Conservation Committee Krishna Bahadur Rumba said that people’s movement has been banned in the area.
There are around 333 households along the river that winds through Wards No 8 and 9 of Hatiya VDC and Churiyamai VDC-6. District Land Conservation Office Chief Pushpa Ram Thapa said that settlements and land in the low area face risk of soil erosion and landslide every year due to deep streams in upper parts of the range. He said the programme was launched to thwart the risk. Of Rs 8.5 million allocated in the district for the purpose, Rs 3.5 million has been allocated for works on the river.
