ARGHAKHACHI, JUN 02 -
Even 23 years after construction work started, Naumure Hydropower Project is still tottering and faces uncertain future.
Started in 1988 to supply electricity in Arghakhanchi and its neighbouring Pyuthan district, the project halted midway for want of budget. The government’s failure to allocate budget has hit the project where it hurts.
Experts say the same amount of electricity can be generated from the project during both the rainy and dry seasons.
India had agreed to construct the project during the visit of UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal when he was the prime minister. However, the southern neighbour was reluctant after local people opposed its proposal.
Experts had prepared a report after a three-month-long survey.
The report says 245 megawatt of electricity can be generated in Naumure.
However, lack of budget has shut down the project after construction started, said a local resident, Pitambar Saru. Another local Ram Bahadur Saru said Arghakhachi and Pyuthan will be greatly benefited once the project starts operation. LDO of Arghakhanchi district Punya Bikram Poudel
said millions of rupees are needed to complete the project. He said the government is yet to respond to local requests for budget.
