Tourist arrivals to Nepal swelled 22.9 percent in the first five months of Nepal Tourism Year (NTY). According to the data released by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), the country hosted 208,137 foreign visitors during the period January-May against 169,322 in the same period last year. Nepal has targeted bringing 700,000 tourists by air during NTY.
Arrivals in May amounted to 39,179, up 47.1 percent. However, tourist departures surpassed arrivals during the month. According to the NTB, 52,489 foreign travellers departed from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in May. Tourism entrepreneurs said that frequent strikes in the country last month prompted tourists to cut short their stay.
NTB statistics show that arrivals from all the major markets were up in May. The South Asian segment registered a positive growth of 71.5 percent. India, which is Nepal’s major market, recorded a robust growth of 78.4 percent. Similarly, arrivals from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka increased 26.2 percent, 24.1 percent and 31.6 percent respectively.
Arrivals from Asia (other than South Asia) have also recorded a remarkable growth of 63.9 percent in aggregate. The number of Chinese tourists doubled compared to the same month last year. Similarly, arrivals from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea jumped 134.3 percent, 115.7 percent, 78.3 percent and 94.1 percent respectively. However, arrivals from Japan declined 15 percent.
The European market showed an overall positive growth of 10.5 percent with arrivals from the major generating markets in an upward trend. Arrivals from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Russia were up 1.4 percent, 37.9 percent, 6.3 percent, 34.8 percent, 4.3 percent, 25.3 percent, 57.1 percent and 31.6 percent respectively.
Tourist arrivals from Australia and New Zealand soared 53.2 percent and 129.7 percent respectively while the number of tourists from the US and Canada increased 19.4 percent and 13.5 percent respectively.
