JAJARKOT, APR 22 -
Contractors are accused of selling off subsidised food meant for two VDCs in Humla district. Local residents said around 220 quintals of food distributed by Jajarkot-based depot of the Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) for Nayakwada and Ragda VDCs has been sold en route.
The office assigned contractor Hari Bahadur Khadka and Khadka’s representatives Gobinda Singh, Yogendra Singh and Maniram Damai to transport the food to VDC-based depots. It allocated 379 quintals of subsidised food to Ghat depot at Nayakwada and 400 quintals to Chaukha depot at Ragda.
People said the depots did not receive the allocated food in full amount. Local teacher Gorakh Bahadur Singh said the Ghat depot has received only 100 quintals. Similarly, the Chaukha depot has got 100 quintals of the food grains
The locals said Gobinda and Yogendra sold around 100 quintals on the way while Damai sold 120 quintals meant for Chaukha deport.
They said Damai sold it at Thaplechaur, Pipe and Rimna bazars while the rest sold the food at Kalimati and Saklamasepukhola.
“The Ghat depot is four hours’ walk away. Therefore, they sold over 50 quintals at Sakla,” said Yogendra.
With the depots running short of the subsidised food, people are forced to pay dearly for food in the local market.
Rice costs Rs 80 per kg in the local market while it costs about Rs 34 in the NFC depots. Joint chief at the depot Doleshwor Niraula expressed ignorance about the incident.
