Thai nabbed with fake Indian currency cache

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, APR 18 -
In a major crackdown on fake Indian currency, police rounded up a Thai national along with his henchman in possession of a huge cache of counterfeit Indian currency.

Based on intelligence inputs, a special police squad deployed by the Nepal Police Headquarters raided a Lazimpat-based Gangjong Hotel and apprehended Thai national—identified as Anuvat Sahib—and Ishwor Prasad Shah Teli, a native of Bara. They were held along with Indian currency notes worth IRs. 4,579,000 in the denomination of IRs. 1,000 and 500 from their possession on Sunday evening.  In addition, police also impounded a Hero Honda motorcycle (Ba 40 Pa 696) and a Thai passport issued in the name of Sahib and four sim cards issued by Nepali Telecom.

Police have described the bust of the duo a significant achievement in their fight against the burgeoning trade in fake currency. The arrestees had concealed the counterfeit Indian currency in false bottom of a suitcase and the duo had checked in the hotel on Sunday.

Preliminary investigation of the police unraveled that Thai national Shahib had landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) via Thai Airways along with the consignment of fake currency from Thailand and Kathmandu-based key man Teli was the one supposed to receive the consignment and ferry it to Birgunj. Another alleged smuggler named Arjun Shah was supposed to smuggle the consignment to Indian towns from Birgunj.

Police said the investigation pointed out that the Thai man had long been smuggling fake counterfeit Indian currency. In course of interrogation, the arrested told

the police that he had visited Nepal at least four times carrying the consignment of fake Indian currency notes.  Security personnel suspect that the smugglers, who used to be mainly from Pakistan, could have started using other foreigners other than Pakistani after the police intensified screening of Pakistani passengers at TIA.

Police said investigation was underway to arrest other associates of the syndicate.
