600 tillers to get land ownership certificates

KRISHNA THAPA
RASUWA, APR 15 -
The Rasuwa District Land Revenue Office has started distributing land ownership certificates to farmers who have been tilling ‘birta’—land exempt from taxes—for generations.

Of 600 applicants, 188 will get certificates. There are around 1,000 tillers’ households in Laharepauwa, Dhaibung and Bhorle. The tillers, who have been fighting for land right for six years, are elated. Gita Paudel of Laharepauwa VDC-2 said there were difficulties in utilising the land in various ways due to lack of ownership certificates. “Now, I am happy that I can put the land to better use,” she said.  Farmer Medani Datta of Bhorle said it was a great achievement. “I have become the real owner of the land that I had been tilling for so long,” he said.  Bhawani Prasad Neupane, chairman of National Land Rights Forum Rasuwa, which had taken up the tillers’ cause, said the achievement was hard-earned.
