KATHMANDU, APR 10 -
The government on Sunday expressed commitment to introduce integrated plans and programmes soon to address the problems being faced by the Badi community.
The programmes will also see a two-point agreement signed between the government and the community some four years ago implemented.
Finance Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari said he will include all programmes that the parliament Committee on Women, Children and Social Welfare (CWCSW) suggests to the government in its upcoming budget. Adhikari was speaking at an interaction organised by the CWCSW.
Speaking at the same programme, Minister for Land Reforms and Management Krishna Bahadur Mahara said all the ministries concerned are doing homework to bring in an integrated package to solve all the problems that the community has been facing.
The government estimates there are 8,348 Badi people, including 400 women involved in forced prostitution, in the country, while an estimated 400 children are born illegitimately. However, independent researches have shown that the population of this marginalised community is four times the government estimate.
In Oct 2007, the National Badi Rights Association and the government had struck a an agreement, whereby the government had agreed to distribute identity cards to all members of the community, distribute citizenship
certificates and provide other basic facilities such as education, health and employment.
The government had also agreed to end social and economic discrimination of the Badi people, especially women, who are chiefly involved in flesh trade.
