KAILALI, APR 09 -
Timber worth around Rs 260 million are at risk of fire in forests at Rajipur and Sunapal in Kailali district.
The wood, which was confiscated from smugglers, has been left in the forests after the government banned the felling and export of trees. With the start of the dry season, the trees are always at risk of fire.
According to the District Forest Office (DFO), hundreds of cubic feet of timber worth Rs 260 million are lying there in the forests. There is risk of the wood getting stolen and gutted by fire for lack of proper patrolling every year.
The DFO said that scores of cubic feet timber woods were gutted in a fire in the forests last year. Not only trees, other valuable forest products were destroyed in the fire. Ten of thousands hectares of forest areas were levelled destroyed in a blaze last year.
Smuggling rampant
Timbers smuggling has gone rampant in a forest under Chandranigahapur range post in Rautahat district. An inspection carried out by Youth Association Nepal (YAS), CPN-UML’s sister wing, said that 3,000 cubic feet timbers have been smuggled.
