Workers’ protest spurs Pokhara resort evacuation

LAL PRASAD SHARMA
POKHARA, APR 04 -
Following the Maoist-affiliated All Nepal Hotel and Restaurant Workers Association (ANHRWA)’s stir over the removal of a security guard from Pokhara-based Fish Tail Lodge resort, the resort management on Monday evacuated 40 tourists to other hotels.

The association launched the protest after Nanda Prasad Sharma, security guard in-charge of the resort, was removed from his duty citing incompetence.

Sharma was hired under a six-month probationary period, but dissatisfied with his performance, the resort had extended the trial period by two months. Following his dismissal, ANHRWA ordered the resort to empty the premises, according to the resort management.

The resort has also cancelled 100 bookings of foreign visitors made for Monday, said Tika Prasad Dhungel, front-office manager of the resort. “We (the lodge) evacuated foreign guests to other places to avoid any possible complications,” said Dhungel. Established in the late 60s with unique round cottages, the lodge has 48 standard rooms and 12 deluxe rooms.  The western regional Hotel Association of Nepal has requested the workers to settle the issue immediately, saying that such cases could damage Pokhara’s reputation in the international arena. The resort is also the highest tax payer among 350 hotels and lodges in Pokhara. Buddhi Bahadur Lamichhane, ANHRWA secretary, said they have demanded reinstatement of Sharma. He said the association has not launched any agitation. “We have not called any agitation or strikes on the issue. It was the management’s decision to evacuate tourists.”
