Sole railway service stalled
JANAKPUR, SEP 05 -
It sneezes, it wheezes, it wobbles, it grinds along at an excruciatingly slow pace. Yet it is bravely carrying on the banner of being the country’s sole railway service that makes a snail seem supersonic in comparison.
Now, its days seem done, however. Janakpur Railway, the only rail service of the country, has ground to a halt for an indefinite period owing to engine glitches. People are asking, did it ever run in the first place?
Kewal Nepali of the railway service said the train that left from Jayanagar could not proceed further than Parwaha station on Sunday morning. Its engine died on the engineer. Efforts to revive the decrepit engine went in vain.
Thousands of people in Dhanusha district are directly affected by the discontinuance of the rail service. The railway line serves as the only link for nearly 30 VDCs of Dhanusha to the district headquarters.
The state-run railway is infamous for its rundown carriages, bad tracks, repeated breakdowns and wobbly financial condition. According to reports, the railway has been incurring a monthly loss of nearly Rs 1 million.
Discontent is running rife among the railway employees who accuse the government of not rescuing the company that is already in deep crisis. General Manager Sanjeev Kumar Mallik said that repeated requests to the concerned ministries for upgrading and developing the rail service have gone unheard. Even locals have a huge bone to pick with the government in this regard.
