Three Star upbeat
KATHMANDU: Nabil Three Star Club captain Bishan Gauchan has his team will return home with the trophy of the 59th Bordoloi Trophy Football Championship in Assam. At a farewell programme organised by the club on Sunday, a day prior to the departure, Gauchan said the new team will perform their best in the event. Three Star coach Megh Raj K.C. said the team was one of the favourites to win the championship. K.C. has added striker Ranjeet Shrestha, defender Birjay Maharjan, striker Raj Kumar Ghising, Raju Rai and Bishnu Sunwar in the place of Santosh Sahukhala, Sandeep Rai, Anjan K.C. and Bijay Gurung after they joined Manang Marshyangdi Club earlier. The remaining players in the squad are Sanjeeb Budathoki, Kiran Chemjong, Bijay Dhimal, Sanjeev Shrestha, Anil Ojha, Bikash Singh Chettri, Bikram Lama, Ravi Thapa and Buddha Chemjong. Three Star, who finished third in the Martyrs’ Memorial ‘A’ Division League, had recently won silver at the All India Kalinga Cup in Orissa. In Assam, the club will play their first game on September 8.
AIA Basketball
Valley Public made a winning start in the junior boy’s category of the First AIA Interschool Basketball Championship on Sunday. Valley Public humbled Redon 33-4 with Anmol 17 points. Rose Bud, Unique, and Kathmandu English all won their respective games later in the day. Rose Bud beat Gyan Niketan 33-16; Unique downed Grammar Public 23-6; Kathmandu defeated Brihaspati 22-15. Likewise, in the girl’s category, Rose Bud beat AIA 17-12, while Mahendra Bhawan downed Baba 23-8.
NNIPA ire at Pandey
The Nepal National and International Players Association has reacted strongly to the comment made by Finance Minister Surendra Pandey on Nepal’s uncertainty at the Asian Games due to the lack of funds. Pandey on Saturday had said the participation remained uncertain until a new government is formed. NNIPA has argued sports should not be left behind when all the state organs have been functioning despite the political impasse.
Neri retains captaincy
Cricket Association of Nepal on Sunday (CAN) has announced a 14-member squad for the ACC U-19 Women’s Cricket Championship to be held in Singapore from October 4-14 under the captaincy of Neri Thapa. The Nepalgunj star, who took the captaincy of national women’s cricket team in 2007, was sacked in 2009 but was re-appointed in U-19 age category. Other members are Rubina Kshetri (VC) Sita Ranamagar, Trishna Singh, Mamata Thapa, Manisha Rawal, Sarita Magar, Shraddha Aryal, Neema Tamang, Geeta Chundal Indu Verma, Aarati Bidari, Yonu Khadka and Anjali Chandra.
