KATHMANDU, SEP 05 -
Vashmeshwor Ghat, the public cremation site on the Pashupati premises, is getting better facilitated with cemented crematoriums, drinking water and rooms for mourners.

Of the two ghats in the Pashupati area on the banks of the Bagmati, Aryaghat is meant for cremating bodies of VIPs whereas the Vashmeshwor Ghat is used by the general public for funeral rituals.

Started in March, the construction is expected to be completed in the next three months. At Vashmeshwor, three platforms are being added to the existing seven. Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) officials say the new crematoriums are an innovation on the old ones.

“The new crematoriums require less fuel (logs) comparatively,” said Narottam Vaidya, PADT Treasurer. “The drinking water facility at the ghat will also be improved and rooms will be constructed for mourners as part of the five-million-rupee project.”

According to a deal finalised between the PADT and Nepal Investment Bank Limited, the bank will hand over the project to the Trust once it is complete.
