NC leaders push for statute amendment
KATHMANDU, SEP 01 -
The district presidents of the Nepali Congress (NC) who were elected in the recently held District Convention elections have demanded some amendments in the party’s statute.
The major demands include scrapping of the provision that annuls district presidents’ positions if they file candidacy for the posts of executive member or office bearer at the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC) and making the nominated members of the District Working Committee eligible for holding the posts of any district level office bearers. The upcoming General Convention slated for Sept. 17-21 is going to elect the CWC, which comprises of president, office bearers and members. “The amendment is required to ensure that the party’s district committee has senior leaders at the helm,” said NC Solukhumbu district president. “The current provision in the statute has given no option for the district president to induct non-elected party members in the committee of office bearers. This has barred us from appointing senior non-elected members as office bearers. Those members who are elected are very junior.”
The assembly also formed a seven-member committee comprising of leaders including Ang Gelu Sherpa, Jagadish Narshing KC to prepare a proposal for the amendment and other issues raised by district leaders. The committee will table the proposal at the district presidents’ assembly on Sept 13. “We will take the final proposal to the central committee, and then to the General Convention” said Sherpa. If the Convention passes the proposal, the statute will be amended.
