Trafficking of Nepali children into Indian cities as labourers is on the rise lately. They are trafficked via India’s Raxaul that borders with Birgunj to Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.

According to the data available with the Birgunj branch of Maiti Nepal, 64 children were rescued and handed over to their guardians in the last fiscal year.

Chief of the organisation Sangita Puri said the office, with the help of various non-government organisations in India that work for the welfare of victims of trafficking, rescued 21 children in August alone.

“Most of the victims are from Bagariya, Rajpur, Farahadawa and adjoining VDCs in Rautahat district and range from 10 to 16 years of age,” she added.

Traffickers, who bring such children to another party, get Rs. 1,400 per victim, most of whom from Rautahat and Sarlahi districts. Fearing security checks on the Nepal side of the border, they use the Indian route for the purpose. It is said that traffickers are using their ties to politicians, businessmen, government officials, police, customs officers and border police in Nepal to facilitate human trafficking.
