Maoist chairman faces fresh flak

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 30 -
Central Committee members of the UCPN (Maoist) have lambasted the working style of Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, mainly his monopoly in decision making.

Commenting on political documents presented by Dahal and Vice-Chairmen Babu Ram Bhattarai and Mohan Baidya, the majority of CC members said that the party Chairman is imposing a monopoly in the party and that his power should be curtailed and decentralised. “Dahal is taking important decisions without consulting anyone in the party,” said a Central Committee member on condition of anonymity.

With the aim of making the collective decision, the Maoists have formed a seven-member committee which comprises Chairman Dahal, three Vice-Chairmen, General Secretary and two Secretaries.

CC members reasoned that Dahal should not enjoy unlimited power because the party has already come into peaceful politics. They said he resigned from the post of prime minister without discussing with party brass and called back the May general strike without holding discussion inside the party.

They also complained that the party’s Standing Committee and Politburo and Central Committee have been reduced to rubber stamps. Mainly, leaders supporting the Baidya and Bhattarai camps criticised the working style of Chairman Dahal. However, CC members supporting Dahal said he should remain powerful to keep the party intact. Some members also said that Prachanda Path should be revived to make the party united.

The Dahal faction criticised Bhattarai’s remarks that a new course should be started breaking the ongoing process of the PM election race.

In Monday’s meeting, 26 leaders stressed it would take more than a week to conclude the meeting.
