Animals pose a threat to Bhairahawa Airport

BHAIRAHAWA, AUG 30 -
Security personnel have started patrolling the Gautam Buddha Airport in Bhairahawa to shoo off wild animals that stray on the runway.

The animals frequent the runway from the nearby grassland and pose a threat to flights landing and taking off.

An aircraft belonging to Buddha Air, which was supposed to fly to Kathmandu, was in serious trouble recently when a blue bull appeared out of nowhere on the runway as it was about to take off. However, it the accident was averted in the nick of time.

This is a case in point. Every flight from and to the airport face such threats from these animals.

Airport employees nowadays patrol the runway before the Control Tower at the airport allows any air craft to land or take off.

A pilot of Buddha Air, Pradip Malla, said any animal on the runway pose a threat and accidents are likely.

The grassland around the airport premises, a safe haven for wild animals, is to blame for the problem.

Staffers of various airlines have been accusing the administration of not destroying the grassland. “The administration is reluctant to destroy it due to the income it generates from the land,” said a staffer.
