Monarchy in any form a no-no, say Maoists
KATHMANDU, AUG 29 -
The UCPN (Maoist) on Sunday said it will not accept monarchy in any form.
However, the party said it is ready to make an alliance with former royalists who are committed to republic, national independence, secularism and patriotism.
The Maoists’ official stance on monarchy from the ongoing Central Committee (CC) meeting came amid reports and speeches of political leaders that the Maoist party wants to establish a ‘Cultural King’.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Saturday demanded the Maoists come clear on the issue.
“Our party dismisses the reports and clarifies that it would not accept monarchy in any form,” Maoist Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha said after a decision was taken in the CC meeting.
“However, we are ready to make a front of nationalists committed to secularism, federalism and republic.”
The Chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, Kamal Thapa, has been repeatedly saying that top leaders of the Maoists have expressed their views in favour of a ‘Cultural King’ in meetings with him.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and other senior leaders had held talks with Thapa a month ago. Thapa is advocating a constitutional monarchy and a Hindu state even after the fall of the monarchy and establishment of a republic.
Maoist leaders are meeting some former hard-core royalists resulting in many former royalists joining the Maoist party. The Maoists have expedited their policy of building an alliance with former royalists in the name of “patriotic forces.”
Maoist leaders say different alliances and unions have to be made and dissolved, according to the need of the times. In the past, the Maoists had joined forces with anti-monarchy elements.
The Maoist leaders say that an alliance with former royalists who are patriotic is necessary to launch a movement of national independence.
“We are against monarchy in any form. However, there is a section that supported monarchy in the past but is patriotic. We want to make an
alliance with them to protect the sovereignty of the country,” said Maoist Politburo member Dharmendra Bastola.
