Parties ‘shielding’ criminals in Banke, Dang
- Wanted man becomes Congress regional president
NEPALGUNJ/DANG, AUG 29 -
Narendra Chaudhary, a most wanted man, was elected as Nepali Congress (NC) regional president on July 31. Police deployed to guard the venue where the NC regional convention poll took place recently, did not arrest Chaudhary, an alleged mastermind behind the murder of two CPN-UML activists in Banke five months ago. Instead, they pretended not seeing the NC leader during the convention.
According to police, they could not arrest Chaudhary as a result of pressure from Congress.
This is a case in point of police being compelled to let the guilty free. Such cases are on the rise in Banke and Dang districts lately. Police say they are compelled to release guilty owing to pressure from various political parties.
“Police arrest criminals, but later political parties forced them to free the felons, saying that the criminals are their cadres,” said SP Thakur Ram Gyawali of Dang.
In another incident, a local of Tulsipur-7 Buddhi KC was killed in a gang fight last year. However, police are still unable to arrest the guilty even though they identified the culprits, again due to political pressure.
Digbijaya Rana-led gang and Santosh Budhathoki-led gang are said to be unleashing criminal activities in Banke under political protection from Congress and UML. SP Maheshbikram Shah of Banke said such gangs are affiliated with various political parties. “Most of the youths involved in criminal activities are associated with youth wings of the major political parties,” he added.
A highly placed police source said many organised criminal groups have been dealing in acquiring tenders. “Many cases of crime occur in the course of winning bidding,” the source said.
Police have suspected that some criminal groups having political clout might be behind the murder of Devi Prasad Dhital, chairman of Tulsipur FM Radio.
