Flood situation still grim

KATHMANDU, AUG 28 -
Heavy rains still lashing many parts of the country have wreaked havoc causing floods and displacing hundreds of people on Saturday.

Around 22 people were killed in the past four days across the country in floods and landslide. Over 300 houses have been inundated and 100 families are likely to be displaced due to floods in the Bakraha, Lohandra, Teli and Chisang rivers of Morang.

Around 100 landless families in Kairen VDC-1 have been displaced by floods in the Chisang river, the District Administration Office (DAO), Morang, said on Saturday.

Villagers have started fleeing the flooded areas in search for safety while rescue operations are underway, according to Suresh Adhikari, the Chief District Officer of Morang.

A report from Bharatpur in Chitwan district said around 50 families have been displaced after floodwaters re-entered the Gardi and Bagauda VDCs of Madi. Two people were killed in floods in the Madi area Thursday. Hundreds of families have been evacuated to safer places by the local administration, the report said.

In Janakpur, around half-a-dozen villages are vulnerable to flood after the western embankment in the Kamala river, which was under-construction, was destroyed by floods on Friday. According to Bisheshwor Yadav, chairperson of the Kamala Stakeholder Committee, Dhanusha, villages like Lakkar, Sakhuwa Maran, Balaha, Saghara and Banarjhula are under the flood threat.  

Meanwhile, an 11-year old boy, Sagar Kumal, from Nawalparasi district drowned in a trench near his house on Friday evening.
