NEPSE’s flash in the pan

KATHMANDU, AUG 28 -
The dismal run of the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) continued last week also. However, breaking the last four weeks’ trend, NEPSE gained 1.59 points.

The benchmark index settled at 432.74 points on Thursday, the last trading day of the week. However, the secondary market lost 10.9 points in the opening day of the market and it maintained small gains the following two trading days.

A majority of companies in the four groups saw positive growth in their respective sub-indices while those in the three groups witnessed a decline. Two groups however witnessed no change in their respective sub-indices.

The groups comprising trading and hydropower companies led the chart with an equal gain of 4.71 points. Similarly, the indices of the group categorised as others and commercial banks followed the leaders, posting gains of 4.70 points and 2.40 points respectively.

Meanwhile, the sub-indices of insurance companies, development banks and finance companies declined by 6.81 points, 5.49 points and 1.17 points respectively.

Due to the two days’ public holiday falling in the week, the turnover dropped by 46.09 percent, compared to that of the previous week. The stock market witnessed a total turnover of just Rs. 86.55 million from the trading of 210,533 shares against the realisation of Rs. 160.56 million from the trading of 967,181 shares the previous week.

Last week, the number of transactions was constrained to 2,539 with 91 companies involved in it, 102 companies held 4,553 transactions the previous week.

The shares of Standard Chartered Bank climbed to the pole position with a turnover of Rs. 15.71 million during the week.

Similarly, 9,000 units of Nepal Doorsanchar Company changed hands to register the highest number of shares traded by a single company. Prime Life Insurance topped the list in terms of highest number of transactions with 403.

Last week, 10 million units of ordinary shares of Manakamana Development Bank were listed in the stock market.
