Kathmandu-Bhaktapur road extension 70 pc work over
KATHMANDU, AUG 28 -
Two-thirds of Nepal’s first six-lane highway that is expected to ease traffic woes in one of the busiest intersections in the Capital has been completed. The 30-month long Kathmandu-Bhaktapur Road Improvement Project (KBRIP) has completed 70 percent of its work within the 23rd month of operation.
The project began in November 2008 with a budget of Rs.1.99 billion. The Government of Japan has granted Rs.1.77 billion whereas the Government of Nepal contributed Rs.211 million to the project. The project aims at enhancing traffic capacity as well as activating land use for urban economy. KBRIP will be completed in March 2011.
“The 9.1km-Kathmandu-Bhaktapur section of the Araniko Highway is the first six-lane road project in the country,” said KBRIP Project Manager Saroj Kumar Pradhan. “Expanding the existing two-lane road to four lanes for vehicles with two lanes of 3m width on either side upgrades the road of six lanes.”
The three major objectives including improvement of overall public transportation system were further categorised into eight sites and activities dividing them into three Japanese Fiscal Years (JFY).
Major activities to be completed within the second JFY are road and intersection from Manohara bridge to Hanumante bridge, temporary road from Hanumante bridge to Suryabinayak and bridge works of prestressed concrete girder fabrication for Manohara and Hanumante. According to Pradhan, the goal of two JFYs has already been achieved except for little deviation from the schedule. “In spite of some obstruction due to bandas and Maoist indefinite strike of last April, only 30 percent of work remains to be completed now,” said Pradhan. “If everything goes as planned henceforth, the project is sure to be completed by March 2011.”
The remaining construction works are related to road intersection from Hanumante Bridge to Suryabinayak and the bridge works such as erection of girders and cast-in-place reinforced concrete decks.
