Metropolis gets vehicles for trash management

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 27 -
China provided waste handling equipment worth around Rs. 170 million to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) on Friday.

The equipment include 108 vehicles, including 6 big garbage trucks, 50 hermetic self-discharging garbage trucks, 5 compression refuse collectors, 30 self-discharging and loading garbage trucks, among others. In addition, the Chinese Government also donated 4,000 waste collecting bins. Each bin has a capacity of 240 litres.  These vehicles and equipment worth around Rs. 170 million arrived in Kathmandu a few weeks ago.

“The equipment will help improve the social and economic aspects of the Capital city,” said Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Qiu Guohong, speaking at a hand over function.

KMC Executive Officer Ananda Raj Pokhrel thanked the Chinese Government for the support. However, the vehicles will come into operation only after some weeks.

“We need to train the drivers and make them familiar with these vehicles before taking them to the street,” said Rabin Man Shrestha, an official at KMC’s Environment Department.

KMC officials say the Chinese assistance will considerably help address the Valley’s perennial problem of garbage disposal.  “We were in dire need of vehicles as the population of Kathmandu is increasing by the day, and so is garbage,” said Shrestha.

KMC vehicles have to ply at least three times a day to clear the Capital’s garbage. “With the operation of these vehicles, the Valley’s garbage can be ferried at a time,” said Shrestha, adding that new vehicles will replace the old ones.  “It will also be effective to collect garbage and keep in the bins rather than leaving them on the street.”

The department will donate the older vehicles to municipalities outside the Valley to collect garbage. KMC currently has 100 vehicles for garbage collection and disposal purposes.
