Homes deluged, many displaced
KATHMANDU, AUG 27 -
Floods triggered by incessant rainfall inundated settlements and displaced hundreds of families across the country in the past 24 hours.
In Morang, over 500 families were displaced due to floods in various rivers. Fifty families in Itahara were driven out due to the flooded Bakraha. Some 300 families have been affected by the flood. Police said a 15-year-old girl from Itahara-5 died after being swept away. The Bakraha river also displaced 60 families at Khame Jhoda in Madhumalla. Urlabari-7 and Belbari-3 were also hit by floods.
Nearly 150 hutments at Mechinagar-12 in Jhapa were waterlogged after a river breached its banks on Thursday night. Parts of Arjundhara and Sanischare VDCs were also inundated by a local river. At Kumarkhod VDC-6, the Kankai river displaced around 40 households. A bridge linking Kakkadbhitta with Ramailo Basti was damaged at Kalikhola stream.
Eleven VDCs in Rautahat district have been inundated by waters from the Lalbakaiya and Chadi rivers. Police evacuated more than 30 persons from flood-affected areas on Friday.
A large area of farmland at Kamalakhoch region of Sindhuli district has been flooded by the Kamala and Tawa rivers.
The swelling Narayani river in Nawalparasi district has posed a risk to 12 VDCs of the Gandak region. The river has already damaged one of the spurs built along the river and is likely to create more damage, locals said.
