KATHMANDU, AUG 26 -
Police on Thursday evening rounded up the most wanted cadre of the UCPN (Maoist) Kharindra BK, Sujeet, from the Capital. BK was the mastermind behind the killing of CPN-UML cadre Prachanda Man Thaiba.

Acting on a tip-off, a special squad deployed by the Metropolitan Police Range (MPR), Hanumandhoka, arrested BK from the Sundhara-based Hotel Palace Home.

BK had been on the run ever since the gruesome murder of Thaiba, in-charge of the Youth Force, a youth wing of the UML. BK had gunned down Thaiba while he was returning home in Butwal on March 26, 2009. Superintendent of Police Ramesh Kharel, chief of the MPR, said a preliminary investigation indicated that BK fled to India and entered the Capital some two months ago by changing his identity.

Kharel said BK had changed his name to Arun Thakuri and said he hailed from Makawanpur. Police also recovered a citizenship card and a driving licence under the new aliases. Police succeeded in nabbing BK after keeping him under surveillance for over a month. BK will be handed over to the Rupandehi police on Friday, according to the police.

Enraged over the killing of Thaiba, the UML had announced a nationwide strike to exert pressure on the Maoists to bring him to book.

Commenting on BK’s arrest, Thaiba’s father Ambika urged the government to punish the man under the existing laws.

“It’s not just BK, other culprits involved in my son’s murder should not be spared,” he said.

Who is Sujeet BK?

Sujeet BK, who was born in Tanahun, was working in Rupandehi when he shot dead Thaiba. A Maoist cadre, BK was actively involved with the Maoists’ youth wing, the Young Communist League. The Maoist party had expelled him on April 8, 2009, after he refused to surrender after UML cadre Prachanda Man Thaiba’s murder.
