Dahal under fire for ‘wrongs’
KATHMANDU, AUG 25 -
The UCPN (Maoist) intra-party rift, mainly over the party’s ‘future political course’ came to the fore when two Vice Chairmen, Mohan Baidya and Babu Ram Bhattarai, presented separate political documents at their ongoing Central Committee(CC) meeting on Wednesday.
Baidya and Bhattarai presented their respective documents as Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s document “failed” to impress them. The intra-party rift has widened in recent days and is being directly reflected by the serious differences among top leaders on issues like the future course of the party, identifying the major enemy, people’s revolt, formation of the government and holding the General Convention (GC).
According to party spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma, Chairman Dahal in his document has stated that they should try to achieve the party’s goal through struggle on the streets, the Parliament and, if possible, through the government. “The party should launch a movement for national independence as foreign interference has intensified,” reads Dahal’s statement. Spokesperson Sharma said that documents presented by Baidya and Bhattarai are “supplementary” to that of Dahal.
Bhattarai and Baidya alleged that Dahal’s document is vague and unclear on the future ideological line of the party. Both lambasted Dahal for his “weaknesses” and “monopoly” of the party. “The working style of the chairman is totally wrong; there are financial irregularities in the party rank and file, and there are many factions in the party but Dahal has failed to clear the mess,” a politburo member quoted Baidya’s document.
In the meeting, Dahal assured the CC members that the party would come up with a uniform view on all the controversial issues after intensive discussions on all the documents at the party’s district and state level structures.
