7 die in floods, landslides
KATHMANDU, AUG 25 -
Floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rain continued wreaking havoc in parts of the country on Wednesday as well. At least seven people were killed in floods and landslide related incidents across the country within the last 24 hours.
Two people died in flood related incident in Dang district on Wednesday, police said. The swollen Sewar stream swept away Indra Bahadur Damai of Saigha VDC-1 while four-year-old Pushpa Oli of Halwar-7 drowned in a local canal.
In Udayapur, rain-fed Triyuga River swept away Bhikhari Das of Jogidaha VDC-8. The deceased was an ascetic who had been staying in local Ramjanaki Temple. Police recovered his body some 500 metres downstream. Udayapur police also found two dead bodies on the bank of the river.
Tara Bahadur Majhi was buried alive when his house at Birgha VDC in Syangja district caved in. It collapsed at around 5 a.m., police said.
Flood and landslide killed two more people in Rukum and Panchthar districts.
A middle-aged man died when the water in Pitibang stream at Bhalakcha VDC, Rukum, swept away him on Wednesday. On Tuesday evening, 11-year-old Priti Nemwang perished in a landslide at Nawamidanda in Panchthar district. She was returning home from school, a local said.
Our Dadeldhura correspondent reported that Mukesh Saud was drowned in a local stream at Bagarkot VDC on Tuesday. Nearly a dozen VDCs including Alital, Shrisha and Jogbudha are in peril due to flood.
Meanwhile, police recovered the body of a minor who was buried in Monday night’s landslide at Sadewa VDC in Taplejung. Three members of a family went missing when a landslide swept away their house. Police are searching for two others missing in the incident.
