Villagers torture alleged witch

DOLAKHA, AUG 24 -
A woman, 57, of Chankgu VDC-4, Dolakha, is undergoing treatment in a Charikot-based hospital after she was severely thrashed by her neighbours for allegedly practicing witchcraft.

Lemi Sherpa  was severely beaten up by her neighbours and relatives on Friday evening on charge of practcising black magic to sicken them. Lemi said her neighbours beat her up whenever anyone or cattle fell sick. “The villagers beat me up, accusing me of practicing witchcraft. This is the third attack on me,” she added.

She said she stopped participating in community ceremonies and other functions after villagers began targeting her and calling her a witch. “I had gone to help them douse a fire at the house of a fellow villager at the request of the Mothers’ Group (Ama Samuha), but I was severely beaten up,” she added. Her daughter Niru said that Lemi, a patient of uterine prolapse, has now severe pain in her womb. 

Lemi lodged a complaint against the perpetrators at the District police office. DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh said a police team has been dispatched to nab the guilty and pledged to take strong action against them.
