Three dead, seven missing

KATHMANDU, AUG 24 -
At least three people were killed and seven were unaccounted for in landslides and floods triggered by heavy downpour across the country in the past 24 hours.
Two persons from Madi area of Chitwan drowned in a local river while collecting driftwood, police said. They were identified as Tulsi Mahato and Hari Prasad Bhattarai. In Bajura, one Laxmi Singh of Gotri VDC was buried in a landslide, police said.
Three deaths were reported from Sindhuli district, all in drowning incidents. Police said the bodies of Shree Bahadur Majhi of Mahadevisthan VDC, Unita BK of Jarayotar VDC and Bauwalal Kumar of Dudhauli were recovered from different parts of the district. The trio had gone missing on Monday. Meanwhile, a man identified as Gorey BK of Kalpabriksha VDC of the district went missing after being swept away by the Marin river on Tuesday.
Three members of a family from Sadewa VDC of Taplejung district are missing following Monday night’s landslide. The rain-triggered landslide also displaced 15 families.
In Udaypur, the flooded Triyuga river swept away Asha Rai and Rajkumar Chaudhary of Triyuga Municipality-3 on Tuesday.
Similarly, one Jhak Bahadur BK of Taman VDC of Baglung district went missing after he was swallowed by a local river on Monday evening.
Meanwhile, rain-fed rivers have broken their banks in various parts of the country threatening settlements. More than 20 restaurants based on the banks of the Rapti river at Sauraha in Chitwan have been waterlogged. The swelling river, according to locals, is advancing towards other resorts as well. Koshi river continued to erode its embankment on Tuesday as well.
