Less outbound labour
KATHMANDU, AUG 23 -
Number of Nepalis leaving for jobs abroad decreased by 9.70 percent in the first month of the current fiscal year compared to the last month of the last fiscal year due to the passport issuance problem.
A total of 29,685 individuals including 331 women left the country for jobs abroad during the first month whereas 32,876 workers including 361 women went for overseas job in the last month of the fiscal year 2009-10. However, the number of the workers who left the country during the first month this year increased by 52.29 percent compared to 19,492 including 886 women in the same period last fiscal.
Labour outsourcing agencies said the number of workers went up compared to the same period last fiscal due to major labour receiving destinations minimising the hiring of Nepali workers due to the global recession. They said that the number of workers going abroad also started dwindling due to insufficient passport issuance.
“The downturn will continue due to the passport issue,” said Kumud Khanal, general secretary of Nepal Foreign Employment Agencies’ Association. “Moreover, demand is down due to Ramadan and the Nepali festive season.” Of the total leaving for foreign jobs during the first month of this fiscal, 23,988 including 253 women went abroad through foreign employment agencies and 5,697 on the basis of their individual contracts, according to the Department of Foreign Employment.
In the country-wise data on hiring of Nepali workers, Malaysia absorbed 12,795 individuals during the fiscal’s first month. Saudi Arabia and Qatar absorbed 6,389 and 5,726 respectively whereas the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait admitted 3,155 and 576 individuals, respectively.
Compared to the number of workers hired during the last month of the last fiscal year, Malaysia’s demand went down by 19 percent. From mid-June-to mid July, the country took 15,743 workers from Nepal. Also, the demand from Saudi Arabia’s witnessed a fall by 13 percent.
