Flood havoc looms in riverside settlements
KATHMANDU, AUG 22 -
Incessant rainfall for the past couple of days has put many riverside settlements across the country at high risk of floods. Rain-fed rivers and streams are breaching their banks rapidly.
Flood in the Mahakali river in the Far-Western district of Kanchanpur displaced 22 families at Mahakali Tole of Bhimdutta Municipality-11 on Sunday. The floodwaters have also entered the Jamunaghat settlement of Chandani VDC-2 driving away at least eight families. Efforts from Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force to plug the embankment have proved futile.
A meeting of the District Disaster Management Committee has asked the government to provide a fund of Rs.10 million to contain the flooding. The Mid-Western district of Bardiya is also facing a flood threat posed by the Karnali river. Nearly 12 VDCs at Rajapur Tappu region face inundation hazard as the Indian authority has shut the floodgates of the Girijapuri Dam.
The water level in the Karnali river has crossed the ‘danger limit’ putting the residents from VDCs like Khairichandanpur, Manau, Gola and Patabhar in great danger. Chief District Officer Beni Madhav Gyawali said he has urged his Indian counterpart to lift the floodgates at the Girijapuri Dam.
In Sunsari, the Koshi river has swollen overnight risking erosion of embankment along the Prakashpur and Pulthegauda areas. Nearly 3,000 households at Chiliya Tapu are at flood risk.
