JANAKPUR, AUG 22 -
To many, it may sound unusual that a couple can get a divorce over the telephone. But, such a trend is acceptable in the Muslim community here in Dhanusha district and it is on the rise lately.

As per data available at the Women’s Cell at the District Police Office, Dhanusha, five such cases of divorce over the telephone were registered at the office last year.

“Only a few cases of this kind come to the police while most other cases are resolved at the local level,” said Sub-Inspector Subhadra Ale at the women’s cell.

Muslim religious leaders said that telephonic divorce is acceptable in accordance with their social tradition.

Advisor to Nepal Muslim Society, Dhan-usha, and former deputy mayor of Janakpur Municipality Moham-mad Asghar said a husband has the right to pronounce divorce over telephone.

“Ten percent of the total divorce cases were proclaimed over telephone,” he said adding that telephonic divorces are on the rise these days as hundreds of Muslim youths have gone abroad for foreign employment.

Women rights activists said that women are exploited by this one-sided divorce and that it is a violation of human rights. Central member of Madhesi Janadhakar Forum Loktantrik Jibachhi Chaudhary said“ “Such practices are violations of women’s rights.”

Sub-inspector Ale said that they are dealing with such cases based on existing law. However, Muslim community leaders say that the existing law cannot match their practice.
