High-level meet on MRP row
KATHMANDU, AUG 21 -
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal is holding a high-level meeting on Sunday evening to resolve the controversy surrounding the much-hyped Machine Readable Passport (MRP) deal.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, Chief Secretary Madhav Ghimire, foreign secretary and other senior government officials are invited to the meeting. The
decision to award the contract to Oberthur Technologies has sparked fresh controversy after Minister Koirala declined to approve the MRP design and insignia, accusing her own officials of putting her in the dark during the entire negotiation of the deal.
Following her refusal, the foreign ministry forwarded a proposal to the Cabinet, seeking the prime minister’s approval of the design due to time constraint to meet the revised Jan 1, 2011 deadline to issue the MRP.
