Redress these, says House panel
KATHMANDU, AUG 19 -
Finance and Labour Relation Committee has directed the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management (MoLTM) to play a proactive role in resolving the problems Nepali workers are facing.
Summoning the labour minister, secretary and director general of the Department of Labour and Employment Promotion, the parliamentary committee on Thursday directed them to establish a fund to rescue the people stranded at various countries.
The committee also directed the MoLTM to adopt strict measures to immediately control increasing cases of cheating and exploitation at the hands of agents dealing in foreign employment and ordered them to effectively run the labour desk established inside Tribhuvan International Airport to cater to the people going abroad for employment.
It summoned Labour Minister Mohamad Aftab Alam in response to a letter of lawmaker Gagan Thapa, calling for taking prompt steps to resolve the problems of Nepali migrant workers.
In the recent days, reports are pouring in that many Nepali workers are stranded in various job destinations due to increasing malpractice and cheating in the foreign employment sector. MoLTM officials are complaining about their inability to rescue the Nepali workers left in the lurch due to budget crunch to dispatch Nepali delegations there.
Addressing the committee meeting, Alam complained that diplomatic missions abroad are not cooperating with the MoLTM to address the problems related to foreign employment.
“The Foreign Ministry is turning a deaf ear to the problems faced by Nepali workers abroad. There are labour attaché at a few countries so we are struggling to rescue the stranded people and resolve the other problems of the foreign employment sector,” said Alam. On the occasion, lawmakers stressed on the need of maintaining cooperation between the Labour Ministry and the Foreign Ministry to systematise the foreign employment sector.
