Donors join hands to support health sector
KATHMANDU, AUG 18 -
Leading donors of Nepal signed a new joint financing arrangement (JFA) on Wednesday to funnel their financial support to Nepal's new national health plan jointly under which Nepal will get aid in a more simplified way.
The UK's Department for International Development, the World Bank (WB), the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization, USAID, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities and the United Nations Children's Fund have joined hands to support Nepal in its effort to reduce maternal and child mortality and illness.
The Australian government has also already announced its commitment to continue supporting the government's health programme, a press release issued by the WB stated. Under the JFA, Nepal's requirement to make reporting to donors would be sharply reduced. The government is happy with the JFA. Finance secretary Rameshwor Khanal, who signed the agreement on behalf of the government, said," The signing of the JFA is an important step towards strengthening the government's system."
WB country director for Nepal Susan Goldmark termed the JFA an important achievement towards donor harmonisation. "The harmonization agenda is far from completed," she added.
