Govt mulls mission in Iraq
KATHMANDU, AUG 17 -
With a view to safeguarding the interests of Nepali workers in Iraq, a high-level government panel has recommended opening Nepal’s honorary consulate office in the Gulf country.
Revoking a seven-year ban, the government in July legalised the export of Nepali labourers to Iraq. The latest move is believed to ensure security of Nepalis there.
A meeting of the high-level inter-ministerial panel that comprises foreign and labour ministry secretaries concluded on Tuesday deciding to open the consulate office in Iraq immediately and mandating it to regularly monitor the situation of Nepali workers there. “If we set up an office there, it will be easy for us to take up matter whenever any Nepali worker lands in trouble there,” an official privy to the meeting told the Post.
