Gorkhaland talks end in standoff
SILIGURI (INDIA), AUG 17 -
The seventh round of tripatriate talks between the Indian government, the West Bengal (WB) state government and Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) ended inconclusively on Tuesday.
The talks held in New Delhi ended in a stalemate after the GJM turned down a proposal of the central and WB governments to bring the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council under a special interim authority. GJM representatives were adamant on incorporating Siliguri and Dooars areas in the interim authority.
The GJM has been spearheading a movement for a separate state of Gorkhaland in the Darjeeling hills.
“The government was not ready to include Siliguri and Dooars areas under the interim authority programme. So the talks could not make headway,” Dr. Harka Chhetri, joint-secretary of the GJM, said. Representatives of the central and WB state governments have set the next round of talks for Sept. 7 in New Delhi.
Indian Home Secretary GK Pillai and WB State Home Secretary Samar Ghosh represented the government side in Tuesday’s talks while the GJM had seven members in its team led by General Secretary Roshan Giri.
