MRP design ball in PM court

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 15 -
The issue of the watermark insignia of Machine Readable Passport (MRP) has landed in the court of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal from that of Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala.

The prime minister is taking a final call within a couple of days after Koirala could not approve the insignia due to differences with her ministry officials. “We have delegated the power to the prime minister to approve the design. The Prime Minister’s Office is looking into the matter. It will

take 48 hours for a result,” Minister for Information and Communications Shanker Pokhrel told the Post.

The prime minister was very positive on approving the design as he favoured the current deal, said another minister.

“If our insignia hurts others’ sentiments our people will land in trouble. We avoided maximum errors while choosing the insignia which reflects the changed political context of Nepal as well as promotes Nepal’s peculiarity,” a MoFA official said, requesting not to be named. “Foreign Secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai who had gone to Manila returned on Sunday. The prime minister is likely to hold meeting with the chief secretary and the foreign secretary on Monday and will take the final call,” another senior government official said.
