Maoists must shun violence: Rajnath

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, AUG 15 -
Senior leader of the main opposition party in India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rajnath Singh said on Sunday that his party will accept the UCPN (Maoist)-led government in Nepal only if the party gives up violence.

Singh said his party will object to the Maoist leadership in the new government in Nepal if it continues to hold on to violence.

“A stable government is needed for development and prosperity in Nepal,” Singh said over telephone, during a telephonic interaction organised by Reporters’ Club.

“We cannot change a neighbour even if we can change a friend,” he added.

Even as concerns shown by Indian leaders are being looked at critically here, Singh said India raised concerns over the activities in Nepal, as instability in Nepal will have a spillover effect in India.

On Saturday, a BJP delegation led by Singh met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and urged the Indian government to play a role in keeping the Maoists out of power in Nepal. Claiming that they have been spreading anti-India sentiments among Nepalis, the BJP said Nepal needs “a truly democratic government” at this juncture. The BJP leaders urged Prime Minister Singh to help democratic forces in Nepal form a government as that would be in the best interests of India.

Rajnath Singh claimed that India’s concerns over Nepali politics cannot be called an intervention. “India doesn’t want to interfere in Nepal’s internal affairs,” said the Indian leader. He, however, added it is up to the Nepali leaders to decide whether to form a majority or consensus government.
