The main opposition party in India has urged the Indian government to play a role in keeping the Maoists out of power in Nepal. Claiming that they have been spreading anti-India sentiments among Nepalis, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Nepal needs “a truly democratic government” at this juncture.

Three leaders of the BJP, former president Rajnath Singh, Uttarakhanda former chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and Delhi legislative assembly member Vijay Jolly, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday to convey their party’s “grave concern” over the political stalemate in Nepal.

“India played a frontline role in bringing the Maoists in Nepal to the peaceful mainstream,” Jolly said. “What have they done since then? The Maoist leaders have repeatedly made anti-India statements that have hurt us. BJP would not go to the extent of suggesting who should form the government in Nepal as that is the right of the Nepali people, but the behaviour of the Maoists has made us feel alienated and we are gravely hurt.”

The BJP wants the Indian government to continue adopting a hard-line policy against the Nepal Maoists. “As per my understanding of Nepal, I feel that the people are for democracy and a healthy democracy will lead to a prosperous Nepal,” Singh told reporters after meeting with the Indian Prime Minister. “I assured him that the BJP would back any decision taken by the Central Government on Nepal.”

The BJP leaders urged the Prime Minister to help democratic forces in Nepal form a government as that would be in the best interests of India. “He (Prime Minister Singh) is also concerned about the delay in Nepal,” Jolly told the Post.
