NC convention elects 51 dist chiefs
KATHMANDU, AUG 13 -
The Nepali Congress (NC) has completed its District Convention in nearly 51 districts and elected the district presidents there as of Friday evening. On Friday, poll results were finalised in at least 20 districts. The elections could not yield results in around half a dozen districts as candidates failed to garner majority votes
(51 percent), while others were postponed due to controversies and disputes.
Though guidance from central level factions were seen at work in the elections, party insiders deny that the results so far draw any line between the usual two factions—the establishment faction led by Acting President Sushil Koirala and the other led by Sher Bahadur Deuba. While the Sushil faction claimed that they were emerging strong, the other faction denied the claim.
Unlike what has been claimed, the election results so far, according to some leaders, show that the district level voters cannot be observed as black and white. “There is a large grey area and that has influenced the election results, which show a mixed structure elected in the districts,” said Lalitpur NC leader Udaya Lama. “We cannot box the new elected district leaders to any of the factions.” Interestingly, this time around, the party saw a number of instances where leaders from one faction supported another. Elections in Lalitpur, Tanahun and many other districts demonstrated that there was crisscross voting. Many youth leaders, including Gagan Thapa and Udaya Lama believe that most of the newly elected leaders, especially the General Convention representatives (around 3,000) from the constituency-level conventions are “unpredictable” as they are such a group which is going to vote based on individual candidate’s merits rather than along certain dominant panel or faction.
The youth leaders claim that 50 to 70 percent of the constituencies in the General Convention are unlikely to vote exclusively along certain panels.
“I guess, there are over 90 percent of the General Convention representatives who will be selecting candidates individually and personally,” said Lama.
