Taplejung runs out of cash

POST REPORT

FUNGLING (TAPLEJUNG), AUG 12 -
Food aid provided by the Chinese government to Taplejung has put extra-budgetary pressure on this eastern mountain district.

District Develo-pment Committee (DDC) has no funds to pay for shipping in about 268 metric tonnes of foodstuff from Tibet to Taplejung. A DDC team and parties has left for Tibet to sign an agreement with Chinese officials regarding the aid. The Nepali side, however, is yet to figure out how to deliver the food with no budget for transport.

Durga Prasad Shrestha of the DDC said it requires more than 10 million rupees (more than the cost of the food provided in aid) to transport the food from Tibet to the district.

Tibet has asked the DDC to receive the aid at the earliest. The DDC fears the Chinese government might get vexed if it did not receive the aid offered as a gesture of friendship.
