Flood relief elusive

POST REPORT

SUNSARI, AUG 12 -
Dozens of people displaced by a flood more than 20 days ago are still deprived of relief in Sunsari.

Many villagers of six VDCs and neighbouring areas in the district are forced to starve and live in the open sky due to lack of relief materials. Some of them have contracted waterborne disease after they consumed contaminated water.

The local administration’s failure to furnish details of the victims is to blame for keeping the victims out of relief materials.

In a meeting organised by Natural Disaster Rescue Committee, Sunsari, two days ago, representatives from the government and non-government organisations had said they could not distribute relief materials due to unavailability of data.

Engineer of Drinking Water Office, Itahari, Nischal Subedi said that lack of actual data of the victims is hampering relief work.

“We are planning to set up toilets and tube wells, but we could not proceed ahead in absence of the victims’ actual data," he added.

When asked Chief District Officer Ram Prasad Thapaliya said that he has directed the authorities concerned to ready victims’ details. “Their data will be available soon," he added.
