ARJUN SHAH

BAJURA, AUG 10 -
Seven people, including four members of a family, died in a landslide at Juwapani of Barhabisa VDC-5, Bajura, on Monday night.

The landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried three houses belonging to Rudra Chandara, Gore Chandara and Bhagi Chandara in the impoverished Dalit settlement.

The victims were identified as Mahamati Chandara and her three sons — Roshan, Shankar and Raju. Laxmi Chandara, her two-year-old daughter Sarita and Bhagi Chandara were killed in the incident.

Locals, however, rescued Mahamati’s mother-in-law Setu Chandara. The landslide occurred while the victims were sleeping in the house of their neighbour Gore Chandara.

A team of Nepal Police, Red Cross Society and locals recovered the bodies on Tuesday morning. A Nepal Army team was dispatched to the area as the village is still at the risk of landslide for it has been raining continuously. Prakash Singh, a local, said 37 people have been displaced as five houses in the village are at high risk from the landslide. Red Cross activists provided relief materials including tents, clothes and food materials to the displaced people.  “The villagers are stunned as Rudra Chandara, who is now in India for work, lost his wife and three children. We haven’t dared telephone him yet,” said Dambar Singh, Rudra’s neighbour.

Coordinator of the Natural Disaster Rescue Committee and Chief District Officer Yogendra Prasad Pandey said the administration provided Rs. 30,000 to the families of each victim killed in the landslide.
