Sikta dam construction over

Janak Nepal

NEPALGUNJ, AUG 09 -
Good news for many farmers of Banke district who are deprived of irrigation facility. The construction of the main dam of Sikta Irrigation Project has been completed.

According to project chief Sarvadev Prasad Jaisawal, the main dam worth Rs. 1.70 billion, a major part of the Rs. 7.45 billion project, was recently constructed by Sino-Hydro Lumbini Company, a joint venture company of China and Nepal in four years.

Sikta project is being commissioned through the mobilisation of local resources, expertise and consultants and will irrigate around 42,000 arable land in Rapti zone.

“The international standard dam has been constructed on time,” Jaiswal said.

Jaisawal said the project is ready to award the construction of 20-kilometer main canal this year and has requested the government to allocate Rs. 2 billion budget for tender process and in advance payment to the contractor. The construction has already started.

According to officials, it will take more than seven years to complete the construction of 50-km main canal and around 233 kilometres long-branch canals. “Partial irrigation may be possible in the next three years”, said engineer Min Raj Dhakal.
