Politics killing Parasi school performance

BECHU GAUD

NAWALPARASI, AUG 09 -
Politics has seeped into Nawalparasi’s academia, and has crippled students’ performance, or so it seems.

The outcome of this year’s School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination in this Western district shows that schools run by teachers associated with teachers’ unions and affiliated to different political parties fared badly compared to schools with teachers without unions.

Parents’ groups have accused these teachers’ leaders of drifting away from their duties and taking up a pseudo-profession of politicians. They claimed that union-teachers are active organising protests and sit-ins for personal and professional gains. An officer at the District Education Office (DEO), Nawalparasi, said schools operated by union teachers take most of the benefits and facilities provided by the office through political pressure.

“But when it comes to quality education and performance, these very schools are lagging behind.”

Schools run by non-union teachers and those handed over to communities have better pass percentage, though they lack teachers and other facilities.

District Education Officer Barkhu Prasad Rajak admitted that union-teachers have failed to deliver quality education due to their indulgence in politics.

“The teachers are imitating politicians and that is reflecting in the academic sector,” he said. “It is best that the government scrap the teachers’ unions as politics is not helping education.”
