House panel summons PM, FM
- ALLEGED THREAT TO MAOIST LAWMAKER
KATHMANDU, AUG 09 -
The Committee for International Relations and Human Rights of the Legislature Parliament on Monday summoned Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala in connection with an alleged threat received by Maoist lawmaker Ram Kumar Sharma.
The duo has been asked to attend a meeting of the committee scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
Chairman of the committee Padam Lal Bishwokarma said the move comes as a response to an application written to Speaker Subas Nembang on Sunday by Sharma demanding security.
Sharma has accused a consular of the Indian Embassy of telephoning him on Friday and issuing “death threats” for what he said was lobbying for the UCPN (Maoist) in the ongoing prime ministerial elections. Sharma will brief the House committee on the matter in Tuesday’s meeting.
“The committee will discuss the incident with the prime minister and foreign minister and try to resolve the row,” Bishwokarma said.
While the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has denied the allegation, the government has not made any formal comment on Sharma’s claim.
