KATHMANDU, AUG 09 -
Vegetable prices have gone down in Kathmandu following improved supplies from outside. The total daily supply, which was 400 tons a week ago, has increased significantly to 600 tons, according to Tulsi Das Gautam, executive director of the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Development Board. About 1,000 tons of vegetables are consumed daily in Kathmandu.

Prices of major vegetables have gone down by at least Rs. 12 to Rs. 2 per kg.

While the price of small tomato has decreased from Rs. 46 to Rs. 41 per kg, cabbage now costs Rs. 3 less per kg than its market price a week ago. Similarly, prices of cow pea, bitter gourd and christophine have decreased from Rs. 61 to 49, Rs. 31 to Rs. 27 and Rs. 34 to 26 per kg respectively.

Moreover, prices of leafy vegetables such as mustard leaf and spinach leaf have gone down from Rs. 42 to 44 and from Rs. 42 to 39 per kg respectively. Kathmandu mostly gets its vegetable supplies from the surrounding districts. According to Gautam, more than 100 tons of vegetable items enter the Kalimati market daily from Kavre district while Dhading supplies between 60 to 70 tons. Makwanpur, Palung and Tistung each supply 100 tons of vegetables every day.
